The Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS) was a contestable fund to encourage the establishment of new forests. It was part of the Government’s package of climate change initiatives and offers an alternative to the Emissions Trading Scheme (Forestry) as a way to encourage greater levels of greenhouse gas absorption by increasing the area of Kyoto-compliant new forest in New Zealand.
No new application rounds are planned at present.
Landowners who have received a grant have ongoing obligations to maintain their grant forests. These obligations and the operating details of the AGS are available in the guide below.
