Exporting honey and bee products

New Zealand produces between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of honey each year, depending on climatic conditions. Export earnings are more than $340 million a year and continue to grow. MPI helps honey exporters sell their products to almost 40 countries.

Honey exporter responsibilities

When exporting products from New Zealand, you're responsible for:

  • ensuring your products meet relevant New Zealand standards
  • complying with the destination country's legislation and eligibility requirements
  • reporting non-conformances to MPI – for example, if your products are no longer fit for their intended purpose or are refused entry by the destination country
  • keeping the right records.
