The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has worked closely with scientists and industry to develop an interim labelling guide for mānuka honey. It provides an outline of labelling requirements from the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, as it applies to honey. The general characteristics of mānuka honey are also included. This will help to provide greater clarity for consumers and the industry.

Section 20(3)(a) of the Animal Products Act 1999 (“the Act”) empowers the Director-General of MPI to waive or modify the requirement that an application to register a risk management programme must be accompanied by an independent evaluation report where the proposed programme is fully based on a template, model or code of practice approved under section 12(3A) of the Act.
