Market access requirements for exporting organic products to Japan.
If you're exporting organic products to Japan, you have 4 options for certification:
Option 1: Certification and export under the Official Organic Assurance Programme. This covers plant products and processed foods of plant origin only.
Option 2: Certification and export through a non-Japanese organic certifying body that is registered with the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Option 3: Certification and export through a Japan-based registered certifying body.
Option 4: Export through private-label certification. This option is only available for products that don’t require the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) logo.
For more information, click on the box for each option.
Japan recognises New Zealand's Official Organic Assurance Programme as equivalent to their own organic standards for plant products and processed goods of plant origin.
You should be familiar with the Overseas Market Access Requirement (OMAR) for organic products exported to Japan.
You must have an export certificate (official assurance) from MPI for each consignment of organic product you export to Japan. Apply for an export certificate by completing the Export Certificate application form for organics.
The JAS organic logo is compulsory for plant products and processed products of plant origin. Rules differ for other product types and, in some cases, the logo should not be used at all. Contact your Registered Overseas Certifying Body for support with this option.
