Agricultural and forestry exports from New Zealand

International trade data is collected annually from Statistics New Zealand to provide information about the value of exports with our major trading partners. Export values are collected for a range of agricultural, horticultural and forestry products and are available in a yearly time series.

2011 June year end highlights

  • Total agriculture, seafood and forestry export revenue increased $4,378 million (16 percent) to $31.5 billion, accounting for 71 percent of total merchandise export revenue for the year ended 30 June 2011. The increase in exports was predominantly driven by the increase in demand from China and OPEC members.
  • The dairy sector contributed $13.2 billion to total export revenue for the year ended 30 June 2011, up $2.6 billion (25 percent) on the previous year. This was due to an increase in milk solids production in autumn, strong demand for whole milk powder (WMP) and high dairy prices in general.
  • Meat revenue increased $366 million (7 percent) due to high export prices and despite low export volumes. Wool export earnings increased $169 million (23 percent) because of high wool prices. This was due to increased demand led by China in the midst of a global shortage of wool supply.
  • Forestry export revenue increased $665 million (17 percent) due to strong log demand from China and India driving log prices higher and thus drawing increased volumes out of New Zealand.
  • Horticulture export revenue increased $105 million (3 percent) primarily due to the large volume of wine, pipfruit, kiwifruit and processed vegetables exported from New Zealand.
  • Fisheries export revenue increased $159 million (11 percent) driven by strong demand from Australia and China.
