National Exotic Forest Description 2010 release

2010 NEFD report in PDF is available in the publication database: National Exotic Forest Description (NEFD) as at 1 April 2010

This release contains final results (including an estimate of deforestation) with highlights from the National Exotic Forest Description (NEFD) 2010 Survey. As previously reported in the provisional release of the 2010 NEFD on MAF’s website in December 2010, the finalised figures in this report have not changed compared with what was reported in the provisional release.

The 2010 NEFD survey covered forest owners/managers with 40 hectares of forest or more. The 2010 NEFD questionnaires were sent to approximately 1900 forest owners and managers.

Key points as at 1 April 2010

  • A total forest area of around 1.793 million hectares in 2010, down 4100 hectares (0.2 percent) on last year.
  • The total standing volume of wood increased from 457 million cubic metres in 2009 to 467 million cubic metres in 2010.
  • The total harvested area was up 1700 hectares from 2009 to an estimated 43 500 hectares in 2010. Increased harvesting was largely driven by the maturity of trees and increasing international demand of logs, primarily from China.
  • The estimated new planting for the year ending 31 December 2010 is 6000 hectares, up 1700 hectares on 2009. The estimated new planting under the government funded projects Afforestation Grant Scheme and East Coast Forestry Project contribute to approximately two thirds of the total estimated new planting in 2010.
  • Reported deforestation for the year ended March 2010 was 1700 hectares, down 100 hectares from 2009.
