This report was developed from information gathered through surveys completed by beekeepers, honey packers and exporters and augmented with a review of export documents, published reports and publically available data from Statistics New Zealand.
This assessment presents bycatch estimates of seabirds in commercial trawl and longline fisheries in New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The estimation relied on statistical models that used fishing effort and observer data up to the 2015–16 fishing year. Estimates for the latter fishing year included a total of 4517 (95% credible interval: 3760–5825) seabird captures in trawl and longline fisheries in New Zealand waters.
This report summaries annual estimates of bycatch levels of individual fish and invertebrate species in the trawl fisheries for arrow squid, hoki/hake/ling, southern blue whiting, jack mackerel, orange roughy, oreo, scampi, and the longline fishery for ling from 1990–91 to 2016–17. Total annual bycatch was estimated using a statistical model method, replacing a ratio estimator-based method used in previous iterations of this work.
A reassessment of population size and trends of Hutton’s shearwater following the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake and outlook for the species’ management.
This paper summarises a range of catch and effort statistics for rock lobsters by 1 April–31 March fishing year and 1 October–30 September “offset” year for the 9 CRA QMAs, ending in 31 March 2018 and 30 September 2018 respectively. These summaries include number of vessels, catch and effort (potlifts) by QMA and statistical area, landings by month and a range of QMA-specific CPUE series that are used in stock assessments and to evaluate management procedures.
Documents data used in the 2018 stock assessment of rock lobsters in CRA 6 (Chatham Islands). Datasets described include catch estimates, along with relevant sources, from the commercial, recreational, customary and illegal components of the fishery, standardised catch per unit of effort (CPUE), size data (LFs) from observer catch sampling and voluntary commercial fishery logbooks, and tag-recapture data.
Information was collated from resource managers and eel monitors from iwi and hapu nationwide for the purposes of compiling an eel inventory. This report highlights matauranga maori as an integral component to the successful analysis required of any MPI eel programme.
This report describes the results of the random-site potting survey for blue cod (Parapercis colias) off south Otago in April–May 2018. Estimates are provided for population abundance, size and age structure, sex ratio, total mortality (Z), and spawner biomass-per-recruit ratio. The 2018 potting survey was the third in the south Otago time series, with previous surveys in 2010 and 2013. The 2010 survey was a dual random-site and fixed-site experimental survey in three of the six strata, and 2013 was a solely random-site survey in all six strata.
This report presents all available commercial fishery catch-at-age data sets for hake (Merluccius australis) caught by trawl, and ling (Genypterus blacodes) caught by trawl and longline, up to the 2016–17 fishing year, and trawl survey catch-at-age data sets for both species up to summer 2017–18.
