Increasing the sustainability of fisheries while adding value
The Fisheries Industry Transformation Plan (ITP) will focus on initiatives to:
- improve the environmental performance of our commercial fisheries, and
- increase the value created from fishing.
The fisheries sector supports people throughout Aotearoa New Zealand by providing jobs in our communities and contributes to New Zealand's ongoing prosperity, with annual exports valued at $1.4 billion.
The ITP will support a shift towards a vibrant, environmentally sustainable, and profitable fisheries sector across all areas of the value chain – from harvesting to production and market development.
Developing the Fisheries ITP will involve many people
The Fisheries ITP will be developed in partnership with the sector. It is important that everyone can have their say about the future of the fishing industry.
Alongside the ITP Leadership Group, Fisheries New Zealand will meet with a broad range of partners and stakeholders to get their views. We'll start talking with them in November 2022.
Fisheries ITP Leadership Group
A leadership group has been set up to co-design the ITP and bring a diverse range of perspectives to the plan's development.
- Wayne McNee (Chair)
- Maru Samuels (Māori fisheries advisor)
- Steve Tarrant (Moana)
- Craig Ellison (Ngāi Tahu Holdings)
- Andrew Talley (Talley's)
- Jeremy Helson (Seafood New Zealand)
- Damon Cooper (Harbour Fish)
- George Hollinsworth (E tū)
- Abby Thompson (Food HQ)
- Dan Bolger (Fisheries New Zealand)
- Emma Taylor (Fisheries New Zealand)
How the Fisheries ITP fits with other plans and work
The Fisheries ITP will complement other ITPs, including the Food and Beverage, Agri-Tech, and Advanced Manufacturing ITPs. All the plans are working to contribute to a high productivity, high wage, lower emissions economy.
The Fisheries ITP is part of the Fit for a Better World programme of work. It will complement and help speed progress toward its productivity, sustainability, and inclusivity targets.
