Samples taken to check for contaminants
Through sampling and analysis, MPI verifies the absence or presence, extent, and distribution of contaminants in bee products for export. This ensures these products comply with Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMARs).

Residue limits
MPI keeps a confidential surveillance list, which identifies sources of honey or other bee products where:
- there is potential risk of contamination
- contamination has been found.
Collecting samples
Samples are usually collected by the agency that verifies your RMP during one of their routine visits. However, samples can be collected by any agency recognised by MPI for this work.
After collection, samples are sent to recognised laboratories for testing.
Contaminated samples
If contamination is discovered, MPI can impose a range of measures to manage the risk of further contamination. In the first instance, the source is usually added to the surveillance list.
