While many foods naturally contain the vitamins and minerals we need to stay healthy, manufacturers may also add nutrients to products to increase the health benefits. Fortifying foods

Fortification is when a vitamin or mineral is added to food or drinks during manufacturing to meet a significant health need in the population.

This fortification must be set down in food safety laws and regulations and may be:

  • mandatory – when manufacturers of certain products must add a specific nutrient
  • voluntary – when manufacturers can choose to add the nutrient to their products.
