If you meet the criteria of a log trader, you will need to register to continue operating. We urge any people operating or planning to operate as a log trader that are not yet registered to apply.

You can only register as a log trader if you meet the criteria. You need to:

If your registration application is approved, your details will appear on a public register.

Registered log traders must provide information for a background check during registration. The background check for each person asks questions about the conduct of each decision maker in the business. This includes sole traders.
For each decision maker in the business, you must provide a criminal record check from the Ministry of Justice that is less than 3 months old.

For a business entity, for example a company, you must also answer questions on the application form about whether the business has any criminal convictions.
Civil liabilities are penalties imposed by a court or regulator for various forms of conduct. You must answer questions about your conduct, including relevant civil liabilities for your business and each decision maker in the business.

An agent is someone you can ask to act on your behalf regarding your application and/or registration.
To appoint an agent, complete the ‘appoint an agent’ form. Make sure both you and your agent sign it.

Sole traders and each decision maker for a business entity need to provide a criminal record check from the Ministry of Justice that is less than 3 months old. Decision makers include:

Sole traders need to provide us with either their NZBN or proof of identity (ID). This can be one form of primary ID, or 2 forms of secondary ID.
If your ID is not in English, you need to get a verified translation of it.
Primary forms of ID are government issued. They include your photo, name, date of birth, and signature.

Email the completed application and your documents to forestryregister@mpi.govt.nz.
Once we have received the documents and payment, we will process your application.
We assess your application and let you know the outcome. If your registration is approved, your details will appear on the public register as long as you remain registered.

Once you are registered as a log trader, there are certain things you must do.
What a registered log trader must do
If your application is not approved, we will tell you that your application was declined and the reason why. You may request a review of the decision. We'll let you know how to do this when we notify you of the decision.
Once you are registered, you can ask us to revoke your registration at any time. This means that you will no longer be registered. Your details will be removed from the public register.
