Responsibilities of a registered food importer
Anyone importing food into New Zealand for sale must make sure the food is safe and suitable for consumers.
Your responsibilities as a food importer
If you bring food into New Zealand and plan to sell it, you are a food importer. Food importers need to register with MPI.
You need to follow New Zealand’s food importing rules. This means that you need to:
- source safe and suitable food
- keep food safe during storage and transportation
- keep good records
- have procedures in place to recall food if it is unsafe or unsuitable, or becomes unsafe or unsuitable.
