Why registration is being introduced
The bill has been developed to strengthen the integrity of New Zealand’s forestry supply chain through the regulation of log traders and forestry advisers.
These changes are considered critical for the:
- country’s reputation as a reliable, high-quality producer and exporter of wood products
- improved economic, employment, and environmental outcomes for the industry and community regionally and nationally.

Benefits of registration
The bill will support:
- the continuous, predictable and long-term supply of timber, as well as equity of access for both domestic processing and export
- a more transparent and open market for log sales through the provision of professional advice
- the confidence and informed participation of businesses and investors in the forestry and wood processing sector
- the achievement of improved economic, employment, and environmental outcomes nationally and in our regions
- improved climate change outcomes
- the long-term development and sustainability of our forestry and wood processing sector.
