Proposed closures to the recreational harvesting of cockle and pipi at Ngunguru and Whangateau

Your views sought

This consultation paper outlines sustainability concerns for cockles and pipi at 2 locations in the upper North Island – Ngunguru Estuary and Whangateau Harbour. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking tangata whenua and stakeholder views on proposals to close these sites to recreational harvest.

A closure at Ngunguru would be the first time the area was closed to recreational fishing under the Fisheries Act 1996.

Whangateau is currently closed to recreational harvest - this closure will expire on 26 March 2016.
