Public Meeting and Call for Submissions: Mātaitai reserve application at Timaru

Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua has applied for a mātaitai reserve over two areas of fisheries waters at Timaru, South Island. The first area covers 1.5 sq km extending from near the southern end of Washdyke Lagoon to the Caroline Bay Wharf, and offshore approximately 500 m. The second area covers 5 sq km extending from approximately 500 m north of Scarborough to Lagoon Drive and offshore approximately 2 km (refer to map).

A public notice regarding a public meeting with the local community and calling for written submissions from the local community will be published in The Timaru Herald on Saturday , 21 June 2014 and Wednesday, 2 July 2014 .

The public meeting will be held on Saturday, 5 July 2014 at 7 pm at Arowhenua Marae, 38 Huirapa Street, Temuka.

The closing date for written submissions from the local community is Wednesday, 23 July 2014 .

After the local community consultation period, a further public notice will be advertised in The Timaru Herald and MPI website, inviting written submissions from persons who take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or own quota, and whose ability to take such fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or whose ownership interest in quota may be affected by the proposed mataitai reserve.

Note: All submissions are subject to the Official Information Act 1982 (“the OIA”) and can be released, if requested. If you have specific reasons for wanting to have your submission withheld, please set out your reasons in the submission. MPI will consider those reasons when making any assessment for release of submissions if requested under the OIA.
