Review of Shellfish Sustainability Measures for 1 April 2014

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking feedback from tangata whenua and stakeholders on proposals to review sustainability measures for selected fish stocks for the 2015-16 fishing year, beginning 1 April 2015.

1. Rock lobster

The multi-stakeholder National Rock Lobster Management Group (NRLMG) is proposing that:

  • New management procedures are used to guide Total Allowable Catch setting in the CRA 2 and CRA 9 rock lobster fisheries; and
  • Total Allowable Catches, allowances and Total Allowable Commercial Catches are set for the CRA 2, CRA 3, CRA 4, CRA 7 and CRA 9 rock lobster fisheries using new or current management procedures.

2. Southern scallop

MPI is proposing to decrease the Total Allowable Catch for southern scallops at the top of the South Island (SCA 7), set an allowance for other sources of fishing mortality for the first time, and decrease the Total Allowable Commercial Catch.

MPI is seeking feedback from tangata whenua and stakeholders on an additional option as part of the review sustainability measures for SCA 7 for the 2014-15 fishing year, beginning 1 April 2014.

As such, MPI is extending the consultation deadline by 10 days on the SCA 7 review, from February 21 to March 3 to encourage Tangata Whenua and other stakeholders to consider the full range of options.

3. Sea cucumber

MPI is proposing to review the deemed value rates for sea cucumber along the South-East Coast of the South Island (SCC 3).
