Purpose of AVMAC
The ACVM Advisory Council (AVMAC) is not a decision-making body. It provides advice to MPI relating to the regulatory control of agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines (ACVMs).
The Council's focus is on managing risks to trade in primary produce, animal welfare, public health, and agricultural security. This may change over time. We routinely review AVMAC's purpose, functions, and membership to make sure it continues to be effective.
How we operate
AVMAC is part of the consultation process. MPI consults widely on any discussion documents, draft policies, or standards.
We also develop recommendations from a number of AVMAC working groups. These groups are made up of people with relevant expertise who may come from outside the member organisations.
AVMAC has representatives from 10 member organisations covering a range of views within the sector and both domestic and export market interests. This includes:
The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) was added to cover concerns in this area. A wide range of affected products are covered, including fruit, dairy, beef, lamb, poultry, and vegetables.
