Monitoring, surveillance, and testing of meat and animal products
MPI has programmes and systems in place to check that meat and animal products are safe for their intended purpose.
MPI surveillance programmes
MPI has surveillance programmes for monitoring the health of live animals. This programme protects animals from potentially costly diseases. It also allows New Zealand to maintain disease-freedom statements that give trade partners the confidence to accept our exports.
Monitoring programmes under the Animal Products Act
MPI runs monitoring programmes under the Animal Products Act (APA) that complement other food safety controls to ensure animal products are safe and suitable for human consumption.
Food safety monitoring under the APA
Under the APA, there are 2 monitoring programmes that cover meat and animal products:
- the National Microbiological Database (NMD), which tests meat and poultry for specified organisms
- the National Chemical Residues Programme (NCRP), which tests cattle, sheep, goats, deer, horses, pigs, ostriches, wild animals, poultry, salmon, and honey for a wide range of agricultural compounds and contaminants
Monitoring for the National Microbiological Database
Microbiological data is collected in the National Microbiological Database (NMD) and analysed to ensure meat or poultry for sale in NZ or for export is free of organisms that might make it unsafe.
National Chemical Residues Programme
The National Chemical Residues Programme (NCRP) involves collecting and testing samples from targeted and randomly selected animals or animal products. Results are used to establish the level of good agricultural practice and for official assurances purposes.
