Importing pet food, animal feed, and supplements

Find out the requirements for importing oral nutritional compounds (ONCs).

If you want to import products that are exempt from registration, including pet food, animal feed, or dietary supplements, you must make sure it complies with the requirements of the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines (ACVM) (Exemptions and Prohibited Substances) Regulations 2011.

This means that you must:

  • ensure the imported animal feed or dietary supplement is fit for use (Regulation 7)
  • ensure the specified information is on the label of the imported animal feed or dietary supplement (Regulation 12)
  • meet the specific requirements for ONCs (entry 25 of Schedule 2)
  • keep the specified records about the importation (Regulation 15).

Make sure you don't make misleading statements about the animal feed or dietary supplement (Regulation 13), particularly involving therapeutic claims about the product.

If you're importing feed commodities, you must also meet the requirements for these products. Find out about these requirements:

If you alter the product or its labelling, you will be classed as a manufacturer under the law and will need to meet the minimum manufacturing requirements.

Border clearance of ONC imports

For commercial imports of ONCs such as animal feed or supplements, you also need a class determination letter to show border officials before the product will be released. (There is a fee for this service.) The border officials may delay clearance if they are not sure the imports are properly authorised under the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997.

For private imports of exempt products (involving small amounts for use on own land or plants), check with MPI first to find out if it fits the definition of an agricultural compound that is exempt from registration. We can provide an email confirmation for clearance at the border.
