Innovative trawl technology
Find out about how MPI is enabling innovative trawl technology, and how you can apply to test or use this new way of fishing.
New technology – better outcomes
MPI has made changes to the regulations for commercial trawling, so that fishers can trial and use innovative new trawling technologies. The technology involves new types of nets, which have less impact on the environment, and can reduce by-catch of undersized fish, seabirds, and mammals.
In July 2017, we changed regulations to allow this new activity. Now we need to develop the specific rules for the trial. MPI is consulting with industry on this, to decide on:
- the rules for trialling these new technologies
- how the technology can be used commercially if a trial is successful.
Submissions are also open to the public. If you would like to make a submission on these rules, check the draft notice, and then email your submission to:
Submissions close at 5pm on 17 September 2017.

Applying to test and use
When the consultation process is complete MPI will provide information on this page about how to apply to test new technologies for trawling, and how to get permission to use new technology commercially.
The regulations to enable digital monitoring and innovative trawl technology were gazetted on 13 July 2017, and are available on the NZ Legislation website:
- Fisheries (Reporting) Regulations 2017
- Fisheries (Geospatial Position Reporting) Regulations 2017
- Fisheries (Electronic Monitoring on Vessels) Regulations 2017
- Fisheries (Trawling) Amendment Regulations 2017
