This report details the application of a generalised surplus production model to a range of New Zealand stocks. All stocks had an abundance index, but with varying degrees of information in the data. Estimation was achieved within a state-space Bayesian framework using Sampling-Importance-Resampling, incorporating both observation and process error, and an informative prior on the intrinsic growth rate. Results support application of this type of model for formal stock assessments.
Assessments of SCI 1 and SCI 2 stocks have been updated, and both were accepted. For SCI 1, SSB remains stable at around 75% SSB0. Fishing intensity has consistently been below F 40% B0. For SCI 2, SSB has continued to increase, and is between 89% and 113% SSB0. Fishing intensity peaked in 2002 but has declined in recent years, while SSB/SSB0 has increased. For both stocks, future catches up to 156 tonnes (SCI 1) or 200 tonnes (SCI 2) to 2021 are not predicted to reduce the SSB below 40% SSB0.
The commercial eel (longfin, Anguilla dieffenbachii; shortfin, A. australis) monitoring programme began in 2003–04, capturing processor recorded data from all individual landings throughout New Zealand on eel catch weights, species composition, size grades, and catch location at the catchment level. This report provides detailed results from the 2012–13 to 2014–15 fishing years, and also examines trends in the North and South Island time series from 2003–04 to 2014–15.
This report presents population estimates for cockles Austrovenus stutchburyi and pipi Paphies australis across 12 sites in northern North Island for the 2015-16 fishing year. It includes population information and sediment data for Bowentown Beach, Cheltenham Beach, Cockle Bay, Little Waihi Estuary, Marokopa Estuary, Ohiwa Harbour, Okoromai Bay, Pataua Estuary, Tairua Harbour, Umupuia Beach, Whangateau Harbour, and Whitianga Harbour.
