Keeping out exotic freshwater pests
Exotic freshwater pests (those that are not native to New Zealand) can have negative environmental impacts affecting:
- water infrastructure
- recreational practices and tourism
- ecosystem health and native species
- way of life
- food safety.
It is important to keep these pests out of our waterways and ensure any suspected sightings are reported promptly to Biosecurity New Zealand by calling 0800 809 966.
About our watchlist of freshwater pests
We did a risk assessment of freshwater plants, invertebrates, and fish and identified some high-risk species that are not naturalised in New Zealand.
These "watchlist" exotic freshwater pests have had significant negative impacts (environmental, social and economic) in places they have invaded overseas. The temperature tolerance of these watchlist species indicates that New Zealand is likely to be suitable for these pests to establish here.
Our watchlist guide describes each of these species to increase awareness of them, so we can detect them early.
Each page of the guide contains information on high-risk exotic freshwater pests, organised by taxonomic group (invertebrates, fish, and plants). We describe key distinguishing features of each species, the habitat in which they are likely to occur, and their potential impacts. Native species that may look similar are also shown for some species, also with key distinguishing features to assist with field identification.
Species in the guide
- Crayfish.
- Bivalves (mussels).
- Bryozoans.
- Gastropods (snails).
- Fish (like minnow and catfish).
- Plants.
