Importing research samples (excluding animal samples)
If you want to import research samples, you need to meet strict biosecurity requirements to manage any risks associated with these samples. MPI helps you meet these requirements.
Types of research samples you can import
Under the import health standard (IHS) for research samples (excluding animal samples), you can import research materials including:
- laboratory specimens (samples derived from plant, containing microorganisms, soil, rocks, water, organic, and inorganic material)
- herbarium specimens
- trade samples.
This IHS does not provide for research samples derived from animals or humans.
When importing research samples to New Zealand you are responsible for:
- meeting the IHS requirements for the samples
- arranging appropriate treatment for your products, when required
- keeping the right records.
Fees and charges may apply.
