Web cameras have been used to monitor trends in recreational effort at boat ramps in FMA 1 since 2005. Initially, cameras were installed overlooking two ramps in each region (East Northland, the Hauraki Gulf, and the Bay of Plenty), but data from only one camera per region have been used so far. The rationale for maintaining secondary camera systems is examined here. Within region comparisons of daily effort counts provided cameras and aerial surveys conducted in each region suggest that the secondary systems in East Northland and the Hauraki Gulf should be maintained, but not at Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty.
