PSG funding contracts
If your application is approved for PSG funding, we will enter a contract with you to ensure that New Zealand benefits from successful delivery of the project.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) will prepare a contract that reflects the size and complexity of your project. Where PSG funding is $5 million or more, the overall project is managed in partnership through a governance approach.
Intellectual property of PSG projects
Part of the benefits to New Zealand may come through creating intellectual property (IP). We’ll work with you to ensure the IP generated from your project maximises benefits to New Zealand.
Refer to our guidance for more detailed information on IP.

Ensuring the delivery of a project’s benefits
MPI will actively work with you to ensure your project is delivering the expected benefits to New Zealand.
Larger projects are typically long-term with multiple work streams and may involve several co-investors. For these projects, we’ll actively work together as partners around delivery and governance.
Any project that is managed through a partnership mechanism is subject to independent financial audit after completion of the second year, and mid-term independent evaluation. This provides assurance that these investments are well-managed and delivering the expected benefits to New Zealand. In addition, we commission (at our cost) independent evaluations of these projects’ delivery after completion and publish the evaluations on our website.
MPI will support and monitor the progress of smaller investments but will likely be less actively involved in project governance and oversight. Smaller projects may be subject to independent financial audit and evaluation at our discretion.
Regardless of the size of your project, you will need to produce a final report summarising delivery across the lifetime of the project and providing a forecast for the ongoing sustainable benefits that will accrue to New Zealand.
Ensuring public transparency of PSG funding
As part of our good stewardship of public funding, MPI publishes information about our investments on our website, for both current and completed projects, including predecessor fund investments.
This includes:
- project descriptions, funding and co-investors
- quarterly updates for our larger projects
- independent project delivery evaluations
- updates on the outcomes achieved once projects are finished.
