About this consultation

New Zealand Food Safety is proposing changes to the Animal Products Notice: Production, Supply and Processing. The Notice specifies requirements for animal product businesses and Recognised Agencies and Persons of these businesses under the Animal Products Act 1999.

The proposed changes to the Notice

These proposed amendments feature changes to the following chapters and schedules:

  • Chapter A Application, interpretation etc
  • Chapter B Risk Management Programmes
  • Chapter C Good Operating Practice
  • Chapter D Dairy
  • Chapter E General provisions applying to all sectors except Dairy
  • Chapter F Red Meat
  • Chapter H Fish
  • Chapter I Deer Velvet
  • Chapter L Non-dairy Secondary Processing
  • Chapter M Verification
  • Chapter N Recognised Agencies and Persons
  • Schedule 1 Post-mortem examination procedure and disposition tables for domestic petfood farmed mammals
  • Schedule 3 Meat-marking inks
  • Schedule 4 Transfer of red meat product not at required preservation temperature

These include updates to clarify rules, align terminology, and change verification requirements for certain sectors. Full details are in the consultation documents.

This is your chance to comment on the design and content of the proposed amendments. Your submission will help us assess whether we need to amend or refine the proposals.

In addition to consulting on amendments to the Notice, we are also seeking feedback on the verification chapter. This feedback will help us decide if this chapter should be reviewed. Any proposals developed in response to the feedback received on this chapter will be consulted on at a future date.

People can also ask for copies of submissions under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). The OIA says we must make the content of submissions available unless we have good reason for withholding it. Those reasons are detailed in sections 6 and 9 of the OIA.
