Mātaitai reserve application near Waikouaiti, East Otago

Pursuant to Regulation 17 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999, Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki has applied to the Minister for Primary Industries for a mātaitai reserve for the fisheries waters extending from approximately 45 m west of the wharf at the mouth of Waikouaiti River to the Waikouaiti Fishing Easement; and includes Te Tauraka Poti (Merton Tidal Arm); and Kirikiri Whakahoro (Merton Stream) to approximately 500 m northeast of the intersection of SH1 and Butters Road (refer to the map below).

Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki and the Ministry for Primary Industries have previously consulted with the local community on the application. Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki have since amended the boundary of the proposed reserve to exclude the wharf and immediate surrounds.

A public notice calling for written submissions from persons who take fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or own quota and whose ability to take such fish, aquatic life, or seaweed or whose ownership interest in quota may be affected by the proposed mātaitai reserve will be published in The Otago Daily Times on Wednesday, 12 November 2014.
