Review of Sustainability and Management Measures for Southern Bluefin Tuna

The Minister for Primary Industries has released his decision on the Total Allowable Catch for the southern bluefin tuna fishery. The decision affects both the current fishing year and the upcoming 2014-15 season. Additional information can be found in the decision letter below.

Consultation

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking your comments on a proposal to amend the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for southern bluefin tuna (STN 1) for both the current 2013-14 and the coming 2014-15 fishing years.

Southern bluefin tuna is managed regionally by the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT) which meets annually in October. One outcome of the most recent meeting has been the confirmation of the global catch limit and national allocations for members and cooperating non-members for 2014 and 2015 including New Zealand.

These decisions were based on the output of the science-based management procedure agreed by CCSBT to respond adaptively to information on stock status and recommend appropriate global catch limits that will allow the southern bluefin tuna stock to rebuild. The proposed changes in the Initial Position Paper reflect the decisions of the CCSBT.
