Animal fibre and feathers may need to meet strict biosecurity requirements to enter New Zealand. Requirements can vary for each item. MPI sets standards for importing animal products to prevent unwanted diseases, pests, and animals from entering the country.

Types of animal fibre and feathers for import
Certain types of animal fibre and feathers are usually allowed to be imported to New Zealand, including:
- unprocessed, scoured-only, scoured and carded, and scoured and dyed fibre from sheep, goats, alpacas, llamas, or yaks (wool, mohair, cashmere, and alpaca fibre)
- kangaroo, wallaby, possum, and rabbit fibre
- mink fibre
- bristles and hair
- feathers
- wool grease and lanolin
- raw or unreeled silk
- empty, used wool packs.
