Importing timber

If you're importing timber, it needs to meet certain biosecurity requirements to prevent the introduction of pests and diseases to New Zealand. MPI can help importers meet these requirements.

Responsibilities of timber importers

When importing products to New Zealand you're responsible for:

  • meeting the import health standards (IHS) for your products
  • arranging appropriate treatment for your products, if needed
  • reporting to MPI if your product shows signs of disease or pests
  • keeping the right records.

Fees and charges may apply.

Who to contact

If you have queries about offshore treatment or phytosanitary certificates, contact the exporting country's National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) or your customs broker.

Search for NPPO contacts on the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) website
