The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today removed the public health warning for the collection of shellfish from Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula. Toxins in shellfish from this area have now fallen to levels below the safe limit set by MPI.
The public health warning against collecting shellfish on the west coast of the North Island is still in place. The warning extends from the mouth of Port Waikato southward to Te Horo Beach on the Kapiti coast. Paralytic Shellfish Toxins have been detected in shellfish along this western coast at levels above the safe limit set by MPI.
A warning also remains in place for the entire Bay of Islands.
