Monitoring and testing dairy products
Dairy products are tested for contaminants and residues to ensure they meet standards for the New Zealand market and for export.
Under the Animal Products Act 1999 (APA), all dairy products must be safe and suitable for their intended purpose. Food safety risks are managed through a range of measures, including risk management programmes (RMPs), Regulated Control Schemes (RCSs), export controls and other legislation under the APA.
The risk management measures also include monitoring and testing of dairy products under these programmes:
- National Chemical Contaminants Programme (NCCP), which tests for a wide range of agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines in dairy products and milk
- Independent Verification Programme (IVP), which verifies the accuracy of commercial testing.
