1: Animal welfare – Caring for our animals
Students look at the animal welfare system in their local region. Strong links to social studies and technology.

Main things to understand:

  • people have a vital role to play in caring for animals
  • processes are important in animal welfare.

Activities focus on:

  • happy and healthy animals
  • how people care for animals in their local area.

2: Biosecurity – Protecting our local environment
Students are introduced to natural and cultivated environments and ecosystems and encouraged to consider the impact of pests and disease on environments. Strong links to science and technology.

Main things to understand:

  • plants and animals are a vital part of balanced environments
  • there are multiple pathways for pests and diseases to enter New Zealand and spread between regions.

Activities focus on:

  • biosecurity in local environments
  • local pests and diseases
  • Kaitiakitanga.

3: Food – Food products and safety in our region
Students explore food production in their local area. Strong links to health and physical education, science, social studies and technology.

Main things to understand:

  • there are different parts to food supply chains that make up the pathway to consumers
  • food processing is important to keep food safe.

Activities focus on:

  • the local food system
  • reducing risk in the food supply chain and at home.
