Requirement to register
Food businesses in New Zealand may be required to be registered with their local councils or New Zealand Food Safety. Who they register with depends on where the business is based and the type of food control plan or programme they are operating under. Some exemptions apply.

Check before you make a complaint
Some food businesses are more likely to be registered with their local councils. Contact your local council if your complaint is about:
- an individual selling baking or homemade ready-to-eat meals from their kitchen or online in a social media forum
- a café, eatery, takeaway or restaurant
- an individual selling packaged food from home or online in a social media forum.
