Apply for a new animal products country listing
Find out how to get premises listed for export to a new market.
The country listing process
Your premises may need to be added to a country list so that you can export to that market. This will depend on the market and product. To apply, you will need to:
- check the destination requirements for your chosen market and product
- contact your site verifier from your verification agency
- fill out an application form
- complete supporting documentation (if required)
- get your premises checked (if required)
- pay the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) Approvals service charge.
The country listing approval process for some markets can take a long time. It is a good idea to start the application process as early as possible because it could take many months. Your site verifier can provide guidance on typical time frames.
Follow the steps to get a country listing
Confirm you are meeting other export requirements
Remember, as well as country listing requirements, there are other requirements you need to meet before you can export. This includes meeting New Zealand food safety standards and requirements set by overseas markets.

Check destination market requirements
Requirements are different for each market and product. These are specified in overseas market access requirements (OMARs). There is a different OMAR for each market.
For some markets, you need to get your premises approved. This will be stated in the OMAR. Approved premises appear on a country list.
Search OMARs by country/market: animal products, wine, and organics
You'll need to apply for access to view OMAR documents because they are password protected.
Subscribe to OMAR updates
Information in OMARs changes regularly. Subscribe to email updates to follow any changes to your market requirements. The subscribing category for OMARs is "Animal products exports (including dairy)".
Start the application form and contact your site verifier
Find the application form for your product, or the market you want to export to. The OMAR documents will tell you what application form you need.
Export premises country listing application forms
Complete the first section of the application form and send this to your site verifier. Don't complete the MPI Approvals Service Charge section until your verification agency has approved the application.
Get your form and premises assessed
Your verification agency will need to assess your application before you submit it to MPI. This may require a site visit and/or an audit, depending on the listing requirements of the market.
Once your verification agency has finalised their assessment, the form will be returned to you as approved for submission to MPI.
Complete and send your form
After you receive the approved application form, pay the MPI Approvals service charge and fill out the MPI Approvals Service Charge section of the application form.

Add your payment reference information to the application form. Email the completed form, payment receipt and any required documentation to email@example.com
Wait for approval
For some markets, MPI manages the list. This means that MPI can approve a listing without requesting approval from the overseas market. We'll let you know when your listing has been approved.
If MPI doesn't manage the list for your market, we'll process your application and then contact the country you want to export to. We’ll tell you when the overseas market:
- has been informed of your application
- gives its approval.
