What our fees cover
We calculate fees on a cost-recovery basis.
Activities and services you may be charged for include:
- processing an application for a new or changed fish-farm licence
- annual administrative costs for a fish-farm licence
- processing an aquaculture decision
- registration of an aquaculture agreement or compensation declaration
- annual administrative cost as a fish-farm licence holder or registered fish farmer.
Not all of the charges listed on this page may apply to you, and there may be other charges not listed here.
Land-based fish-farm licence charges
We will charge:
- for processing an application for a new fish-farm licence
- to renew or change a licence
- an annual levy for maintaining the licence database.

* A fish farm licence is granted for a maximum 14 year period.
Marine-based farm charges
Charges for aquaculture decisions, aquaculture agreements, or compensation declarations are invoiced after processing. FishServe, on our behalf, manages payments and invoicing for aquaculture agreements and compensation declarations.

Arbitration costs
If an arbitrator is used to decide on compensation requirements, there may be other costs. If the resource consent holder decides not to pay the compensation determined by the arbitrator (so the reservation won't be lifted), they must pay costs to quota owners of participating in arbitration.
