Laboratory testing of water supply and wine analysis
The Wine Act 2003 says wine makers in New Zealand must test their water supply to make sure it's safe for making wine. If exporting, you may also need to lab-test your wine composition.
If you make wine using your own water supply or if you export wine, you need to meet certain requirements under the Wine Act 2003. Laboratory testing is used to check that these requirements have been met.
Testing water for wine making
If you make wine using your own water supply, you must get your water tested to make sure it is 'clean':
- every year
- when you use a new source of water
- within a month of an environmental event that could affect your water (like a major weather or seismic event).
Samples must be taken from the point of use and tested by an approved laboratory.
Tests for E. coli must be performed at a:
- laboratory accredited to ISO 17025
- laboratory recognised to test drinking water by Ministry of Health
- laboratory approved under animal products Recognised Laboratory Programme (RLP) , or
- recognised dairy agency .
You must also test your water annually for turbidity – this does not have to be done by an approved laboratory.
Export wine composition testing
If you export wine, some countries require a laboratory report confirming that the wine composition meets their requirements. If this analysis is needed to support an official assurance (export certificate) for that country, testing must be performed by a recognised laboratory.
