Direct Grants payments
Direct Grants payments are paid in instalments when you meet certain milestones during your project.
How payments will be made
Your grant will be paid in instalments when you meet certain milestones during your project.
Once you achieve a milestone you can make a claim for payment and we’ll either ask you for evidence or visit your property to verify. Most projects will only have 2 milestones, although some may have 3.
Milestone 1: Activity underway (all projects)
You can make a claim for your first milestone once your project is underway. This is normally 30% of your total grant, and is paid once you provide evidence that you’ve committed to the project (a seedling order deposit receipt, for example) or have started your project (planting or pest/weed control, for example).
If you face significant barriers to meeting the upfront costs of planting, discuss these with us. Email firstname.lastname@example.org
Milestone 2: Successful establishment (all projects)
You can make a claim for your second milestone once your forest has successfully established. Successful establishment is when a minimum of 750 seedlings per hectare are growing free from significant pest and weed competition.
The establishment milestone is a further 50% of your total grant value. However, if Te Uru Rākau is confident your project will successfully meet minimum standards for the term of the contract, the full value of your grant (that is the remaining 70%) may be paid at this point.
Timing for this milestone is dependent on the type of trees you plant and various environmental factors, so you have some flexibility for when you claim for this. Some species will successfully establish within 2 months of planting, but others may take much longer.
Once you’re happy your block has met the establishment standard you can make a claim for payment. You have up to 4 years from the start of planting or reversion to make a claim.
Milestone 3: Successful maintenance (only some projects)
If we consider maintenance is a key factor in the long-term success of your project you’ll have a third milestone for successful maintenance.
Successful maintenance is where at least 600 stems per hectare of natives or 400 stems per hectare for exotics are growing and free from significant pest and weed competition.
The maintenance milestone is the final 20% of the grant value.
You also have flexibility for when to claim this milestone, but it should be within 8 years of when your planting or reversion started.
