What our fees cover
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) calculates fees on a cost-recovery basis.
Activities and services we charge for include:
- border clearance inspections
- travel costs.
Not all the fees on this page may apply to you and there could be other charges not listed here – like storage or laboratory costs.
Border clearance charges
MPI may charge you for costs related to inspecting your cut flowers and foliage when they arrive in New Zealand.
You may be charged extra fees if MPI's biosecurity inspector has to:
- travel to inspect your goods
- wait before inspection can start
- be called out after hours.

Other charges
Treatment costs
Some types of cut flowers and foliage must be fumigated with methyl bromide on arrival in New Zealand. The import health standard (IHS) for your cut flower or foliage species will tell you if this treatment is needed.
You'll have to pay the costs of this fumigation.
You may also have to pay other treatment costs if the MPI inspector finds that your flowers or foliage are contaminated.
