Exporting meat

Meat exports are worth a lot to New Zealand. Beef and lamb exports alone total more than $5 billion a year. MPI's role is to make sure meat exports meet New Zealand food safety standards and comply with the requirements of our overseas customers.

Meat exporter responsibilities

When exporting products from New Zealand you are responsible for:

  • ensuring your products meet relevant New Zealand standards
  • complying with the destination country's eligibility requirements
  • reporting non-conformances to MPI as soon as possible – for example, if your products are no longer fit for their intended purpose or are refused entry by the destination country
  • keeping the right records.
