What our fees cover
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) calculates fees on a cost-recovery basis.
Activities and services we may charge for include:
- border clearance inspections
- travel costs.
Not all the fees on this page may apply to you and there could be other charges not listed here – like transport and storage charges.
Border clearance charges
MPI inspects vehicles, machinery and tyres for harmful organisms like pests and diseases. Costs for these services vary depending on how the vehicles are imported.
Vehicle inspection or re-inspection at approved places of first arrival
Break bulk vehicles will be inspected at the port, and a fixed charge will apply for each vehicle.

Charges for inspecting tyres, machinery and vehicles at transitional facilities
Vehicles that are imported in containers or that arrive by air will be inspected at transitional facilities. An hourly rate charge applies for these inspections.

Other charges
If vehicles, machinery, and tyres need to be cleaned, treated or decontaminated after arriving in New Zealand, MPI may add reinspection charges at the hourly rate.
