Veterinarians' responsibilities
In New Zealand, the use of HGPs implanted into bovine animals is strictly controlled through the Animal Products Notice: Hormonal Growth Promotants. Veterinarians need to be familiar with their full legal obligations under the notice.

HGPs are registered under the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997 and are classified as restricted veterinary medicines that must be administered by a veterinarian or under the supervision of a veterinarian. Veterinarians' responsibilities are to ensure that:
- HGPs are administered by persons who are competent to do so
- technicians who implant HGPs are employed in the same practice as the veterinarian
- the animal identification and treatment details of every treated animal is recorded with MPI
- records are kept of the owner, date of treatment, product used, and the person who administered the treatment
- a scanned record is kept of the NAIT devices of implanted animals
- all records are kept for at least 4 years from the date of HGP implantation.
Veterinarians must report scanned NAIT device records and tag application details to MPI within 10 working days. They must also report any serious adverse events and notify MPI of new safety information.
