Food packaging is part of New Zealand's food safety system
It must be chosen, used, and managed carefully to ensure food remains safe, suitable, and fit-for-purpose for consumers.
If you are a food business that sells packaged food, you need to make sure you use packaging that:
- protects your food from contamination
- is not a source of contamination
- maintains food quality and shelf-life
- meets requirements under the Food Act 2014, Animal Products Act 1999, or Wine Act 2003.
