WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW to stay safe

Food allergies can cause severe reactions, ranging from mild to life-threatening.

Ask about ingredients to be safe from food allergens when ordering a meal.

When requested, restaurants and cafes must be able to tell you about the allergens in their food.

Some may do this voluntarily – check their information on menus and signage in food cabinets.

Asking about allergens isn’t being fussy – it’s about your health and ensuring you have food that is safe for you.

If it's not clear, it's okay to ask.

Businesses must be able to identify and manage the allergens in their food

Allergen information must be provided when requested by a customer. Some businesses may choose to voluntarily declare allergens on menus and signage.

But if there's no information or you're unsure, you can ask staff about allergens that might be in the food. They can tell you verbally or in writing to help you make an informed choice.

If a food business is making claims like the food is 'dairy-free' or 'gluten-free,' it must make sure it is managing those allergens in a way that ensures the food is safe for you.

Tips for safely dining out when you have a food allergy or intolerance

  • Read menus carefully. If it’s not clear, ask.
  • Read the labels (ingredients and warning statements) to check if the food contains any allergens of concern to you.
  • If the food is not clearly labelled, ask staff what's in the food they are serving.
  • Ask how the restaurant minimises the risk of cross-contact with the food that is a risk to you.
  • If you're unsure if a food item is safe for you, do not order it.

If you need one, always carry your adrenaline injection (EpiPen) when eating out.
