MPI is seeking feedback on the proposed national fisheries plans for highly migratory species and deepwater fisheries. Consultation will close on 4 August 2017.

Fisheries plans are planning documents recognised under section 11A of the Fisheries Act 1966. The plans establish objectives for the management of New Zealand's highly migratory species and deepwater fisheries, and strategies to achieve them.

National fisheries plans for highly migratory species and deepwater fisheries were first published in 2010. MPI is now seeking feedback on the revised plans.

In the proposed national fisheries plans for highly migratory species and deepwater fisheries, the high level management objectives remain broadly the same as those in the 2010 plans. However, the plans have been updated to incorporate policies approved since 2010 (such as the national plans of action for seabirds and sharks).

Consultation documents

The purpose of national fisheries plans is to provide clear management objectives to support the purpose and principles of the Fisheries Act 1996 and to identify key deliverables for MPI over the medium term (5 years).

Background to consultation

Domestic and international stakeholders rely on the plans to provide clear, measurable objectives for the management of fisheries and the framework through which MPI will consult with stakeholders and progress towards those objectives.

Input was sought from industry, iwi, and environmental stakeholders on draft deepwater and highly migratory species fisheries plans in 2016. That input has contributed to the development of the draft plans presented here.
