Proposed amended Food Notice: Requirements for Recognised Agencies and Persons 2026

Have your say

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) welcomes your feedback on the proposed amended Food Notice: Requirements for Recognised Agencies and Persons.

This consultation opened on 9 June and closes on 7 July 2026.

What we are proposing

The Food Notice: Requirements for Recognised Agencies and Persons outlines the expectations for recognised agencies and persons. Persons must be considered "fit and proper" to carry out the functions for which recognition is sought. The notice outlines the requirements for new and ongoing recognition, including those for verifiers and evaluators, such as reporting and continued professional development.

The purpose of this proposed amended notice will clarify requirements for:

  • qualifications of evaluators providing an evaluation service
  • qualifications of verifiers providing a verification service
  • the requirements for pre-recognition competencies and maintenance of recognition for verifiers and evaluators.

The notice also includes general editorial updates to approach and terminology to improve clarity. For example, definitions for "yearly period" and "continuing professional development".
