30 October 2025: Decision on glyphosate and summary of submissions released
As a result of the consultation process (which included meetings with stakeholder groups), New Zealand Food Safety received new information that the use of glyphosate at the specific preharvest timing is no longer considered common agricultural practice for wheat, barley, and oat grain sold for human consumption.
Consequently, New Zealand Food Safety intends to establish Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for glyphosate of 0.1 mg/kg for wheat, barley and oat grain (the same as the current default MRL) and 6 mg/kg (as originally proposed) for field peas (dried). New Zealand Food Safety will require changes to labels of relevant glyphosate products to reflect current use practices.
We would like to thank those who took the opportunity to comment on this consultation, and today we released the summary of submissions.

6 August 2025: Updated food notice published
During this round of MRL proposals, New Zealand Food Safety received over 3,100 submissions on the proposal to increase the MRLs for glyphosate in wheat, barley, oats and field peas (dry). Based on this, we are still considering our decision on the proposed glyphosate MRLs. Rather than delay a decision on the other MRL proposals, we have processed them separately with the revised notice in place as of 31 July 2025. The glyphosate entry in the notice remains unchanged.
A summary of submissions will be published at a later date.
