Characterization and and catch per unit effort analyses were done for the black cardinalfish fishery. Trawl survey and observer catch sampling data were also reviewed. The fishery is concentrated on underwater features off the east coast of the North Island with smaller catches elsewhere. There was a substantial decline in catch-per-unit-effort during the 1990s and early 2000s but since 2004/05 they have been relateively stable.
