The consumption of bivalve molluscan shellfish (BMS) can lead to infectious human diseases. The New Zealand Animal Products (Specifications for Bivalve Molluscan Shellfish) Notice 2006 requires that live raw BMS be tested for Escherichia coli. This document outlines the MPI method for enumerating E. coli.
