A survey of Foveaux Strait in 2012 found the recruit-sized oyster population had increased from 725 million in 2009 to 918 million, and oyster densities had also increased. Bonamia infection was widespread, but highly variable. Total bonamia mortality was estimated to be 111 million recruit-sized oysters, of which about 30 million died before the survey and about 81 million were expected to die post-survey. At this level of mortality, the oyster fishery is expected to continue to rebuild.
